It’s that time of year many of us dread: the ending of Day Light Saving Time. The days grow shorter, there is less sunlight and 4:30 comes around and it seems like we all should be getting in our pajamas! Less outdoor playtime may lead to more screen time for your children. But, before you give in to the pleading for You Tube shows or games on your smart phone, read what Josh Golin, shared with the Willow Wood staff at the annual Alliance Networking Dinner. Josh is the Executive Director of Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood.

As this new school year commences, I have found myself humming the tune I learned as a Girl Scout, “Make New Friends, But Keep the Old”. With the addition of 42 new families (a Willow Wood record) we have the opportunity to do just that! The excitement of Willow Wood’s summer activities has hopefully sparked new friendships for not only our new families, but for our returning ones, as well.

While much of our school year will look similar (Intake Conferences, Staggered Schedules, Kohl’s Halloween Party), we have many inaugural programming we are excited to kick off: New Parent Orientation (September 6), Poker Night (September 22) Curriculum Night (September 24), and Family Open House (January 27).

The Wikipedia definition of picnic is, “a family oriented meal taken outdoors (al fresco) as part of an excursion – ideally in scenic surroundings, such as a park, lakeside, or other place affording an
interesting view, or else in conjunction with a public event.”

We hope you will be able to join your Willow Wood family members in our annual end of the year picnics. The picnics take place on our scenic hill on the playground. It is a time to gather and celebrate another memorable year of learning, growth and community. The picnics will take place the week of May 21.

The Alliance for Early Childhood provides our community with a multitude of opportunities to better understand and enhance the lives of our young children. In March, The Alliance sponsored an afternoon with Tuesday’s Child, Behavior Management Experts in Chicago. The discussion was enlightening, uplifting, humorous and educational. Many of Willow Wood’s staff members were in attendance and took away new strategies and ideas to implement in the classrooms.
